What Can and Can't Go in a Roll-Off Dumpster

A roll-off dumpster handles the vast majority of what a renovation, cleanout, or construction job produces. A few materials, though, are not allowed in any container. Knowing the difference up front keeps your pickup on schedule and your invoice free of surprise fees.

What you can toss

General construction and demolition debris is the bread and butter of a roll-off: lumber, drywall, flooring, cabinets, fixtures, roofing shingles, siding, and packaging. Household junk from a cleanout also fits, including furniture, appliances (with refrigerant removed), and general clutter.

Heavy materials like concrete, brick, dirt, and asphalt are accepted too, but they are usually placed in a dedicated container because they hit weight limits fast. Let us know in advance so we can size the load correctly.

What has to stay out

Some items are prohibited by law or by the landfill, no exceptions: wet paint, oils, fuels, solvents, and other hazardous liquids; tires; batteries; asbestos; medical waste; and pressurized tanks like propane cylinders. Electronics and appliances containing refrigerant often need special handling as well.

These rules are not ours to bend. Facilities reject loads that contain them, which can mean a returned haul and added cost.

Why the rules exist

Prohibited materials are kept out of dumpsters because they can leak, catch fire, or contaminate an entire load at the disposal facility. Keeping them separate protects the crew, the equipment, and the environment, and it keeps your project moving without a rejected pickup.
